(credit building credit cards) how often and how much do you have to pay to build up yr credit scr average ?

My credit history is poor never handled credit before and i want to improve my credit score by applying for these credit building cards but how much do you pay and how often, how do they work? plzz helpp would be appreciated United kingdom by the way :)
