Is nicotine alone a carcinogen?

I just switched to e-cigarettes. they still have nicotine but its delivered through water vapor so its smoking without the actual smoke, tar etc... I realize its still not great for me but its by leaps and bounds the lesser of two evils. but is the nicotine alone a carcinogen? what is it, specifically, in cigarettes that cause cancer?
