How many guitar lessons do you need to get started?

My bf has always wanted to learn how to play the guitar, and I'm thinking of buying him a basic little guitar and setting him up with a few lessons. How many lessons should I set up with an instructor? Just one, and go from there? Should I get a commitment of X amount of lessons? Don't wanna get scr**ed here. Thinking of getting a Yahama guitar, heard they were OK and not too expensive.
